Nordic Seminar 2012

Relations
Relating to the profession – tools and strategies
Relating to the Deaf Community
- Relating to other interpreters

We are happy to share the latest information on the Nordic Seminar for Sign Language interpreters, which will take place in the Faroe Islands June 1st to 3rd 2012 (flight home is on Monday the 4th). The great venue we have found for our seminar is in the small town Gjógv.
Have a look at the hotel here...

We are pleased to present to you 5 of our Sign Language interpreter colleagues:

Turntaking when the interaction participants are physically separated from each other

Camilla Warnicke, Sweden has a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Sociology and is at present a PhD student and doing research on interaction between users and interpreter on Video Relay Service

The mobility of deaf students

Katarina Mårtensson, Sweden is interpreting in Stockholm and studying Sign Language at Stockholm University. She is sharing the experience of interpreting for an exchange student at university level focusing on strategies for communication when the student and the interpreters don’t have a common language.

Trust your inner emotions
Ralf Wiebel, Germany. A Trainer in relaxation, focusing on stress prevention. The art of interpreting is to find the right equilibrium between emotions and keeping the distance to the client.

The distant Classroom interpreter

Jessica Hansen, Norway is responsible for the field of video remote interpreting and video relay service in Norway. How does remote interpreting influence the different relationships in an interpreted classroom setting?

What makes a good Sign Language Interpreter?

Árný Guðmundsdóttir, Iceland will share results from her master’s dissertation. Árný will be presenting findings from interviews with Deaf users and Sign Language interpreters from a small deaf community.

In addition to these presenters we plan to allocate time to organize discussion groups or workshops on the
participants’ own subjects. This activity has been well received on previous Nordic seminars.
The program will commence on Friday night with introductions and presentations, and will end on Sunday evening. There are no late flights from Faroe Island on Sunday and we think it a shame if the program was
limited to one day only, so we have chosen to stay and enjoy the Islands and good company until Monday.
